What are Cenospheres?

Cenospheres are off-white in appearance and are a loose, fluid powder material. The characteristics of off-white hollow glass microspheres are: good sound insulation, flame retardancy, electrical insulation, low density, low oil absorption, and high strength.

They are widely used in inks, adhesives, engineering plastics, modified rubbers, and electrical insulation parts. They are widely used because of their stable performance, good weather resistance, and low price.

What are the properties of the cenosphere?

  1. Acid resistance. The main components of hollow microspheres are Sio2 and AL2O3, which are stable in various solvents, acids, and weak bases.
  2. Hollow spheres, Cenospheres are hollow round microspheres with a particle diameter of 2-50 microns. They have excellent fluidity and are the first choice for filling materials.
  3. Electrical insulation. They are used as filling materials for various electrical switchgear.
  4. Cenospheres have a low bulk density, about 1/3 of water. As a polymer filler, it is used in much less quantity than other mineral fillers, with a small loading amount, saving polymer consumption, and thus reducing product costs.
  5. Flame retardant. Hollow microspheres are inorganic metal oxides with a melting point greater than 1450 degrees. They do not decompose at high temperatures and are not easily deformed. As polymer fillers, they can improve the flame retardant properties of polymers. They are used in the building materials and paint industries.
  6. Low price. Based on the very small bulk density of Cenospheres, compared with other fillers, the same weight loaded in polymers reduces production costs, and is at least 300% cheaper than artificial glass beads.
  7. Low shrinkage. Cenospheres are one of the few low shrinkage fillers that can meet the needs of the filling material industry today. This issue is particularly important when a large proportion of them are loaded in polymers.
  8. Hollow microsphere particles have high strength. Due to its hard shell, it can withstand higher compression strength.
  9. Low oil absorption. The oil absorption of hollow microspheres is much lower than that of calcium carbonate, which can reduce the viscosity of the entire resin system, has great potential for addition, and reduces costs.

How to make cenosphere?

The methods for making hollow microspheres include flame flotation, solution method (spraying method) and centrifugal method.

Flame flotation method

This method can be used to make hollow glass microspheres. It only needs to mix the glass particles with the foaming agent, foam them at high temperature to make fine particles containing bubbles, and then carry out the above process.

Solution method (spraying method)

This is a process for making glass microspheres. The molten glass can be formed into microspheres by spraying.

Centrifugal method

This is also a method for making glass microspheres. The molten glass is stretched into filaments by centrifugal force, and then cooled and solidified into microspheres.

What is the difference between fly ash and cenosphere?

Fly ash is the waste residue that must be discharged by coal-fired power plants. It is mainly formed by coal powder during combustion and contains a certain number of hollow microspheres. Its main chemical composition is composed of oxides of silicon, aluminum and iron, as well as a small amount of oxides such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.
