What is the production process of reaction-sintered silicon carbide beams?

1. Raw material preparation
It is necessary to prepare raw materials such as silica sand, carbon materials (such as petroleum coke, anthracite, etc.), and quartz sand. These raw materials are the basis of reaction-sintered silicon carbide, and their quality and proportion will affect the performance of the final product.

2. Crushing and screening
The prepared raw materials are crushed and screened to obtain raw materials of appropriate particle size. The appropriate particle size helps the subsequent mixing of ingredients and the reaction, ensuring that the raw materials can fully contact the reaction and ensure the consistency of product quality.

3. Batching and mixing

  • Batching in proportion
The various raw materials are batched in a specific proportion. This proportion needs to be determined based on the performance requirements of the required silicon carbide beam, such as strength, hardness, high temperature resistance, etc.
  • Uniform mixing
Fully mix the prepared raw materials to evenly distribute the raw materials, provide a uniform material basis for subsequent reactions, and ensure the stability of the reaction process and the uniformity of product quality.

4. Green body molding

  • Slurry injection molding: Mix the mixed raw materials with appropriate liquid to make a fluid slurry, and then inject it into the mold for molding.
  • Dry pressing molding: Put the mixed raw materials into the mold and mold it under a certain pressure.
  • Cold isostatic pressing molding: Put the raw materials into the elastic mold, put them into the high-pressure container, and evenly apply pressure through the liquid medium to mold them. These molding methods can be selected according to the actual production needs and the shape and size requirements of the product to prepare the green body of the silicon carbide beam.

5. Siliconization reaction

  • Preparation of reaction environment
Put the green body in a vacuum or inert atmosphere.
  • Heating and reaction
Heat the green body to above 1500℃, at which time the solid silicon will melt into liquid silicon. Liquid silicon or silicon vapor will penetrate into the green body containing pores through capillary action, and react chemically with C in the green body. The in-situ generated β-SiC will combine with the original SiC particles in the green body, and finally form a reaction-sintered silicon carbide ceramic material, which is the basic material of the silicon carbide beam. In this process, the advantage of reaction sintering is that there is almost no volume shrinkage, which is more suitable for the preparation of large-sized and complex-shaped structural parts (such as beams).

6. Post-processing

  • Cooling
After the reaction is completed, the silicon carbide beam is cooled to reduce its temperature to room temperature.
  • Possible processing
Depending on actual needs, some processing may be required on the silicon carbide beam, such as cutting and grinding, to meet specific size and surface quality requirements.
